I served in the US Coast Guard from 1965-1969.

After boot camp in Cape May, New Jersey I spent 6 months in Electronics School in Groton, Connecticut. Then I was assigned to the CGC Northwind, an Icebreaker out of Seattle, Washington.

15 months on an Icebreaker will do strange things to a guy and after I rotated off the Northwind,I volunteered for a year in Vietnam. Trust me on this - never volunteer for anything in the military.

Most folks don't know it, but the Coast Guard was in Vietnam, and they played a significant role inOperation Market Time keeping arms and ammunition from reaching South Vietnam from the ocean.
